Preparing for an Acting Audition: Tips from Chaneé

Chaneé, experienced ASL teacher and performance coach

Auditions get vague when actors try to be impressive instead of clear. These acting audition tips are the ones Chaneé uses in private acting lessons: want something, make a choice, and let the body tell the truth.

Read the scene for the want

Before you memorize a line, name what the character is trying to get from the other person. A job. Forgiveness. A yes. If you cannot say it in one sentence, the scene will wander. This is the fastest way to improve acting skills when the sides arrive the night before.

Make one strong choice and keep it

Casting sees a lot of careful, medium reads. A specific choice gives them a person. In a lesson, Chaneé will pressure-test the choice. If it collapses, you pick a better one. You do not retreat to neutral.

Your body is part of the read

Feet, breath, and where your eyes land are audible, even on camera. An acting teacher for beginners will often start here, because tension reads as “not ready.” You can be new and still be specific.

The hour before

Say the scene out loud twice. Once for the words, once for the want. Then stop rehearsing in the hallway. If you want a coach for that process, book the session around the actual sides instead of searching only for an acting coach near me.
